Laundry

One electric dryer load uses about as much electricity as two days of running the fridge. Line drying some of it is the cheapest fix; a clean vent is the safest.

Cheapest first

  • Line dry or rack dry some loads, even just towels and sheets in summer. Check your state’s right-to-dry law if you’re in an HOA.
  • Spin faster. A higher washer spin speed leaves less water for the dryer to remove.
  • Use the moisture sensor setting instead of a fixed timer.
  • Clean the lint filter every load, and the vent duct every year or two. A clogged vent makes the dryer run longer, and the National Fire Protection Association says failure to clean is the leading cause of home dryer fires.

What a dryer costs you

A better dryer

ENERGY STAR says certified heat pump dryers use about 70% less energy than conventional dryers. They need no outside vent, which makes them a good fit for apartments and closets, but they take longer per load and cost more.

Picks

Brabantia rotary clothes dryer

Yards: a full load outside

  • Umbrella-style, folds away
  • Ground spike or socket

Folds down when you're done, which HOAs tend to tolerate better than a permanent line.

Watch for: Check your HOA rules and your state's right-to-dry law first.

Folding indoor drying rack

Apartments

  • Folds flat

Indoor drying works anywhere and adds humidity in dry winters.

Watch for: In damp rooms, run a fan or dehumidifier.

Retractable clothesline

Porches and balconies

  • Pulls out between two walls or posts

Disappears when not in use.

Watch for: Balcony rules in leases can be stricter than state law.

Gardus LintEater dryer vent kit

Dryers that take two cycles

  • Rotary brush on flexible rods
  • Attaches to a drill

A clogged vent makes the dryer run longer and is a leading cause of dryer fires.

Watch for: Unplug the dryer (and shut off gas for gas dryers) before you start.
