Pool pumps

In a home with a pool, a single-speed pump is often the biggest electricity user after air conditioning. Slowing it down is the fix.

Slower is cheaper, by a lot

Pump power falls with roughly the cube of speed. Run a pump at half speed and it draws about an eighth of the power; it has to run twice as long to move the same water, so it uses about a quarter of the energy. That’s why a variable-speed pump can cut pool electricity by more than half, even though it runs more hours. Your savings

The federal rule

Pool pumps made or imported since July 19, 2021 must meet Department of Energy efficiency standards. For most inground pool filter pumps, only variable-speed designs meet them. You don’t have to replace a working pump, but when an old single-speed pump dies, its replacement will almost certainly be variable speed.

Getting it right

  • Program it. A variable-speed pump only saves if it runs at low speed most of the time. Use higher speeds only for vacuuming, a spa or a heater that needs more flow.
  • Hire a pro to install it. Pool pumps are hardwired, and pool electrical work has strict bonding and GFCI rules. Many states and towns require a licensed electrician or pool contractor.
  • Ask your utility. Many pay rebates on ENERGY STAR variable-speed pumps.
  • Cover a heated pool. A cover cuts evaporation, the biggest source of heat loss.

Picks

Hayward Super Pump VS

Replacing a single-speed Hayward Super Pump

  • Variable speed
  • Same footprint as the classic Super Pump

Drop-in for one of the most common pool pumps, which keeps plumbing changes small.

Watch for: Hardwired. Many areas require a licensed electrician or pool pro.

Pentair SuperFlo VS

Pentair systems

  • Variable speed
  • Built-in timer and speed programs

Built-in schedules make low-speed running automatic.

Watch for: Same installation caveat.

Solar pool cover

Heated pools

  • Bubble cover, cut to shape

Most pool heat is lost through evaporation; a cover cuts it and keeps water cleaner.

Watch for: Remove before swimming; never let children play on it.
